What would happen if there was no punctuation in a society?

I have to write an essay on the importance of language mechanics. I have to write about what would happen if there was no punctuation in a society. But I've run out of ideas! Please help?? It can be anything, just give me some ideas.

  1. I have a curious question on punctuation. What is the proper way to use a double punctuation?

  1. There would simply be no stops or pauses. that is all that punctuation really does… it also sometimes formulates inflection as in a sentence with an exclamation point or a question mark would be read differently that if there was a perod.
    good luck

  2. It wouldn’t matter at all. Japanese has no punctionation, at their society has worked fine for over two thousand years.

  3. it would be very difficult to express ideas and feelings in writing because no one would be able to tell where thoughts and ideas began and ended creating confusion as to the whether the words were a question or a comment would you be able to tell or whether the writer was upset or happy i dont think so and and why would one even bother to write or even try to separate ideas and where would it all end

  4. basically if there was no punctuation english would probably come out looking like this i personally dont know if this is how you want to view the world but hey there you go on a side note though it is quite interesting to try and figure out where things start and where things end ha ha

Well yeah as the above poster said, Japanese don’t really have a lot of punctuation.. though they do use full-stops and commas. Their question marks are basically variations of words, such as adding -ka at the end of desu. So think of a further variation of japanese and work with that on your essay! =)

  5. I wasnt going to say that you are an idiot he said because its true your
    being hypothetical doesn’t make sense

That sentence does say what I want it to say, for lack of punctuation. If someone else tried to punctuate it, it could take several forms:
    1) I wasn’t going to say that. “You are an idiot,” he said, because it’s true your being hypothetical doesn’t make sense.
    2) I wasn’t going to say that. “You are an idiot,” he said, “because it’s true your being hypothetical doesn’t make sense.”

In 1) I am myself, and he said it because…
In 2) I am myself, and he said it, and then qualified it by saying “because.”

    3) “I wasn’t going to say that you are an idiot,” he said, because it’s true your being hypothetical doesn’t make sense.

In this one, “he” is the “I”, not me.

Syntax is the relationship of the meaning of words when place in context with other words, and punctuation helps separate the relationships.

  6. Meaning can be conveyed in completely different ways without punctuation, for example:

    1) Dont give him the money
    2) Don’t! Give him the money!

  7. we would all me mundane, boring, and probably more confused as to what someone is talking about. wouldnt be able to tell if one is excited, asking a question, or making a statement.
