Does anyone have any ideas for a history term paper?

I have to do a term paper for my history class. It has to be over a topic that is related to the course, which means that it can be anything from about 1880 to about 2005. I'd like to get a variety of ideas to choose from but I'm not coming up with anything.

It has to be about the U.S.

I'd like to stay away from the more popular topics if at all possible i.e. WWI and WWII, Pearl Harbor, Great Depression, September 11th.

If you could include any sites to get information from that would be awesome!

Thanks a lot!
must be between 1877 and now. and i forgot to mention that i'd rather not do anything about obama.

  1. the inaugarations.
its all over the news, so it should be easy.
but you can do past ones and compare them.
or any other way to involve them.

  2. Can I please tell you that any history paper on the ROMAN EMPIRE TIMES! Google your information on the Roman Empire BC and AD, in that time frame you have to do it within. It’s very interesting to write about Roman History. Good Luck!

  3. the cold war?

  4. The GI resistance movement to the Vietnam War and how it helped end the war (good book: Soldiers in Revolt, David Cortright; documentary: Sir! No Sir!).

The Red Scare and McCarthyism that ran rampant post-World War II. May be interesting to see if you can find any of Edward Murrow’s reports on Senator McCarthy from the time.

    Good luck!

  5. Thats a big time frame to work with.

There are a few great sites to get initial ideas from….such as http://www.animatedatlas.com/timeline.html

You could do “Presidents through Time’ – The presidential impact on the U.S over 125 years
Or you could work through the Native Americas History, Scientific Advances & Discovers through time….

  6. An interesting topic, since the inauguration is coming up, would be the run of Victoria Woodhull for the presidency in 1872. She was a very interesting person. There is a lot of information on her on the internet.

  7. Umm – wow. You have a LOT of options.

    — Gilded Age – the influence of industrialization on the nation
    — Progressive Era – you can talk about reformers, their reforms, the influence on the nation, and even how the government helped
    — the “Roaring 20s” – talk about American culture, economy, etc [you could also link America's success in World War I to the decade, or talk about how what happened during the 20s caused the Great Depression]
    — Civil Rights movements [1950s-60s] it is kind of common, but you could bring in original ideas, etc
    — LBJ (one of MY FAVORITE presidents) you could compare/contrast how he gained immense popularity by bringing about Civil Rights legislation vs. how he lost popularity because of the Vietnam War
    — Minorities/Immigration – immigration rose starting in the late 1800s – you can pick a group(s) and talk about how they were treated in America, adjusted, and how they influence – good topics would be the Irish, Chinese, Latinos, Puerto Ricans, etc
    — Cold War: you could bring in the anti-Communist sentiments [McCarthyism] the Korean/Vietnam War (Vietnam – you could talk about the hardships there, the excessive bombing, the use of napalm, etc)

okay – so you have a LOT of topics to choose from. Good Luck!
