  1. Thesis statement shows the topic of your essay and the position you are going to take. It can optionally have the points you are going to use to support your ideas.

Since you said nothing about any of these, it is not even possible to give you a sample.

  2. Alright–prepare to be struck with awe and amazement! (just kidding). Here are a few guidelines I use when writing a thesis.

    1. The thesis is an argument. You are making a controversial claim. If you have a good thesis, you have a point with which an intelligent and educated person might disagree.

    Wrong:

King Henry VIII married six times in the course of his life.

    Better:

King Henry VIII married six times, not as a result of his desire to possess women other than his current wives, but rather because he felt obligated to produce a male heir and avoid a crisis of succession upon his death.

Some might disagree with this statement, either partially or entirely. That’s why it’s a thesis statement.

    2. Make sure that you have lots of evidence for your thesis and that you can actually argue about it, as opposed to merely stating your opinion.

Wrong: Purple is a more beautiful color than blue.

Better: The beauty of colors is not intrinsic; historical factors determine the manner in which colors are viewed.

If this were my thesis, I might continue with evidence like this:

Before the modern era, the color purple was valued very highly and was considered the color of royalty because it was very difficult and costly to obtain purple dye; now, however, because purple dye is no more difficult to obtain than any other color, people have stopped valuing purple above the other colors.

    Ok…I hope that helps!

  3. A thesis statement is like a road map for your paper, using your ideas and thoughts about the topic. It tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper. It tells the reader how you will address the subject, and directly answers any questions asked of you. The thesis statement interprets the question or the subject, offers a possible way of understanding it. A thesis statement often offers a point of view that others might disagree with. It is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph, and it presents your argument. The rest of the paper, the body of your essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic and sense and believability of your interpretation. So keep all of those thoughts in mind in constructing your thesis statement. Do a search for “how to write a thesis statement” and you will find several very helpful sites.
